Student Centered Care

At St. John’s Northwestern Birk Infirmary, our main goal is to provide each student with individualized care in order for our students to be at optimal health so they can succeed in all aspects of their lives. Here at Birk Infirmary, your health is our main priority and your student will feel welcomed and supported by our nurses right when they walk through our doors. Investigating, advocating, communicating and following up are just some of the foundations of how we guide care for our students and their individual needs.

THE TEAM BEHIND IT ALL

Our clinic is staffed by experienced registered nurses, a dedicated administrative assistant, and is overseen by a licensed physician. Our nurses bring not only professional expertise, backgrounds in critical care and mental health, but also personal experience as parents, giving them a well-rounded, compassionate approach to care. Whether a student needs help with a stomachache, a muscle strain, or simply a quiet space to regroup, our team is here to support them. We are committed to providing individualized, high-quality care to every student at St. John’s Northwestern Academy.

MAGNUS HEALTH +

Each student will have their own ‘Magnus Health’ account. Magnus Health is our electronic health record (EHR) system. Within this system, parents will be able to submit all required forms and have access to their students’ health information and update it as needed. In addition, our nurses are able to send families refill reminders for medications (see medications tab for more information), and share important health information regarding your student.

When students and families have their Parent Portal set up they will be able to access MagnusHealth. If you already have an account, you can sign in here:

MONTHLY NURSE NOTES

Each month SJN families can expect to receive an email with a monthly “clip board” of important topics that our nurses want to share, as well as reminders for deadlines, trends our nurses are seeing, and so much more! Not only will this be provided to you via email, it will also be a part of every month’s first-issued Reveille.

ILL CHILD COMMUNICATION

Accidents happen and our staff is trained in emergency and urgent need situations. In the event of an emergency, we will always provide life-saving care, first. Parents and guardians will be notified via phone for any emergency or urgent care needs. If parents or guardians are not reachable, St. John’s Northwestern employees will act in the best interest of the child and update parents and guardians as soon as staff is able to.

MEDICAL INFO & REQUIREMENTS

MEDICAL FORMS

All of our required forms will be filled out digitally via our electronic health record (EHR), Magnus Health. Please ensure that all forms are completed prior to arrival on campus.

Medication Change Form | Birk Medication Form

These are the most commonly used forms when starting a new medication, making changes to an existing prescription, or discontinuing one. Please print the appropriate form, have it completed by your primary care provider (PCP), and email it to the infirmary.

INSURANCE

St. John’s Northwestern asks that all students be dropped off with a copy of the front and back of their insurance card.

We do offer international insurance, for those families that are interested in getting more information please contact Kristin Byrnes (Human Resources) at kbyrnes@sjnacademies.org.

PRESCRIPTION MEDICATIONS

We understand that there may be some students who take daily medications and our staff is equipped with the tools to help manage daily medication administration. If your student requires medication, please make sure that all forms are filled out and submitted via Magnus Health prior to arrival. We are unable to administer medications that do not have a signed doctor’s note. Upon arriving on campus, all medications need to be checked into the infirmary and in their original bottles.

OTC MEDICATIONS

Our clinic is stocked with over the counter medications for if/when your student is in pain/discomfort. Please be sure to fill out our “PRN OTC Medication Authorization” form on Magnus Health to give us permission to administer medications to your student. If you do not complete this form, it will delay care for your student.

* Do not send these medications with your student, as medications in the barracks are prohibited and will be confiscated.

Here are just a few of the local partners that we work with to help support your student. These are preferred, not required. If you have a preference for a different provider and will be needing our staff to help with prescription pick ups please be sure to let us know so that we can accommodate your needs to the best of our ability.

These guidelines shall be followed for any school day or school sponsored events. Your child should stay home from school or will be kept in the infirmary for 7 day boarding in the following situations:

● Fever: 100.4 degrees F or greater; may return after 24 hours fever free without the aid of fever reducing medications.

● Vomiting: may return after 24 hours from last episode.

● Diarrhea: may return after 24 hours from last episode.

● Rash: open and draining or if a fever is also present; may return after 24 hours fever free or on treatment for 24 hours.

● Live head lice: those with live head lice will have parents notified but the child may remain at school through the end of the school day. Families must treat the head lice before the child may return to school. Upon return after treatment, a head check will be completed, and student proceed to class. (Revised January 2023.)

● Chickenpox: may return when all pox are dry and scabbed over; about 5 to 7 days after the start of the rash.

● Contagious diseases: strep throat, impetigo, pink eye (bacterial), scabies, ringworm or other diseases not listed; may return after 24 hours on prescribed treatment, meet other above criteria and symptoms improved to participate in their learning.
