Digging Deeper

Bridging the Gap

We bridge the gap between digital imagination and physical reality. The lab features a suite of 3D printers that serve as a tool for creative expression. Students learn to navigate Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software to architect their ideas from scratch and create them. Students have used the 3D printers to help them with history or science projects.

The 3D printers are available to students in STEM classes, but also to the entire student body. Students have 3d printed objects for other classes and their own projects or creations. Students will gain spatial reasoning skills, hands-on learning, and career readiness skills. Students can create prototypes, test, and improve on their design. For example, students can design and build a wing and then test it in our homemade wind tunnel.

Critical Thinking

The Iterative Process: In 3D printing, your first design rarely works perfectly. Students learn to fail fast, analyze why the "spaghetti monster" happened, and go back to the CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software to fix it.

Design Thinking: It forces students to empathize with a problem. If they are designing a prosthetic hand or a simple desk organizer, they have to consider the end-user's needs and constraints.

Spatial Intelligence: Moving a 2D sketch into a 3D environment builds a mental map of how objects occupy space—a skill that’s foundational for architects and surgeons alike.
